The .doc file extension indicates that it is a Word document. If you haven't Word installed, you can get Word Viewer at the link below.

If you have Office 2007 installed which has the newest version of Word 2007, you can right click on the file and select Open With then choose Word 2007 from the list.
Another option is to download Open Office.
How do i open a doc. email attachment using windows vista?
you need word, part of office
vista is only an OS
Reply:I think that depends on which version of Office you have, and if the attachment is a .doc or a .docx.
If you have Office 2007, Word files are saved as a .docx, but files saved in previous versions as .doc can be opened.
It is not backwards compatible without a utility. In other words, if you have Office 97-2003, and are trying to open a Word 2007 (.docx) document, you have to download a file from Microsoft. If this is the case, you may be prompted to do so. If you were not, just go to Microsoft.com and search for "Word 2007 conversion utility".
I hope this answers your question. I had a similar problem when someone sent me a resume to review, and it was a .docx file.
